Peoples National Bank, Patterson/Mifflin, PA (Chartered 1910 - Open past 1935)

Town History

Mifflin was founded as the town of Patterson and is a borough in Juniata County. Mifflin County was created on September 19, 1789, from parts of Cumberland County and Northumberland County. It was named for Thomas Mifflin, the first Governor of Pennsylvania. Juniata County was created on March 2, 1831, from part of Mifflin County and named for the Juniata River. Thus, Mifflin is found in Juniata County. At one time, Mifflin, as well as the small community of Denholm lying directly north of the town, was an important stop along the Pennsylvania Canal and later, Pennsylvania Railroad, boasting fine hotels and services for travelers. The railroad tracks still pass through the town, but they are now owned by the Norfolk Southern Railway.

As of the census of 2020 there were 534 people residing in the borough, a decrease of 93 since the 2000 census. In 1910 the population was 810 and it peaked in 1920 at 965.

Patterson/Mifflin had one National Bank chartered during the Bank Note Era, and it issued National Bank Notes.

In April 1909, a new bank was opened in Mifflin, Juniata County, known as the People's Bank with capitol stock of $25,000. The officers were J.S. McLaughlin, president; H.A. Ebright, vice president; D.M. Hetrick, cashier; and H. Leigh Ebright, assistant cashier.

On January 14, 1936, the stockholders of The Peoples National Bank elected the following officers: Dr. B.F. Long, president; Elmer E. McMeen, vice president; W.H. Zeiders, second vice president; Elmer S. Schott, J.W. Krick, and D. Murray Hetrick, directors. Mr. Hetrick was named cashier and S. David Zeiders assistant cashier.

In July 1961, officials of the Peoples National Bank of Mifflin and the Farmers National Bank of Thompsontown received final approval of their merger by the comptroller of the currency. The new Peoples-Farmers National Bank continued to operate as usual at its two locations in Mifflin and Thompsontown.

On Friday, July 31, 1964, The Russell National Bank of Lewistown and the Peoples-Farmers National Bank of Mifflin joined to form a bank with total assets of $24,669,925.68. The new bank was known as The Russell National Bank, now had four locations at Lewistown, Logan Boulevard, Mifflin, and Thompsontown.
