Town History

Thompsontown is a borough in Juniata County, Pennsylvania located about 7 miles east of Port Royal and 4 miles west of Millerstown. The population was 629 at the 2020 census. Thompsontown was founded in 1755 by William Thompson. It is home to the oldest church in Juniata County.

Thompsontown had one National Bank chartered during the Bank Note Era and it issued National Bank Notes.

Amongst the new national banks announced by the Wall Street Journal in March 1912, was The Farmers' National Bank of Thompsontown, Pa.; capital $25,000. C.A. Meiser, J. Sieber, J.K. Iser, M. Rodgers, W.H. Nelson, and J.T. Allman. Correspondent was S.B. Hetrick, Thompsontown, Pa., (To succeed the Farmers Bank of Thompsontown). On April 26, 1912, the application to organize was approved by the comptroller of the currency.

In January 1929, the following officers were elected: W.H. Nelson, president; W.H. Eichman, vice president; C.V. Felmlee, cashier. The directors were: M.E. Schlegel, B.F. Gayman, E.S. Thompson, B.H. Branthoffer, S. Metz, R.M. Schlegel and A.P. Dimm.

W.R. Sheaffer, cashier for the previous five years of the Ickesburg State Bank, was recently elected by the board of directors as cashier of the Farmers National Bank, of Thompsontown, succeeding J. Franklin Miller. Mr. Sheaffer assumed his new duties Saturday, November 1st, 1930, and his position at Ickesburg had not yet been filled.

In January 1931, the following directors were elected: W.H. Eichman, E.S. Thompson, M.E. Schlegel, B.H. Branthoffer, B.F. Gayman, R. Max Schlegel, and A.P. Dimm. W.H. Eichman was President, E.S. Thompson, Vice President; W.R. Sheaffer, Cashier, and Harry M. Forney, Assistant Cashier.

In July 1961, officials of the Peoples National Bank of Mifflin and the Farmers National Bank of Thompsontown received final approval of their merger by the comptroller of the currency. The new Peoples-Farmers National Bank continued to operate as usual at its two locations in Mifflin and Thompsontown.

On Friday, July 31, 1964, The Russell National Bank of Lewistown and The Peoples-Farmers National Bank of Mifflin joined to form a bigger, better bank for the people of the Mifflin-Juniata County areas. The merger provided a bank with 4 locations in Lewistown, Logan Boulevard, Mifflin and Thompsontown with total assets of $24,669,925.68.
