Traer is located in Tama County in central Iowa. Traer was incorporated in 1873 following construction of Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway through the territory. The city was named for John W. Traer.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Traer was 1,458 in 1900, staying fairly constant with 1,417 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,703 in 1980 and 2010, and the current population is estimated at 1,604 (2018).
