Winona is the county seat of Winona County, in southeastern Minnesota. The city of Winona began on the site of a Native American village named Keoxa. Non-Native Americans settled the area in 1851 and laid out the town into lots in 1852 and 1853. The city is named after legendary figure Winona, said to have been the first-born daughter of Chief Wapasha (Wabasha) III.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Winona was 7,192 in 1870, increasing to 20,850 in 1930. It's highest population was 27,952 in 2010, and the current population is estimated at 26,813 (2018).

Winona Savings Bank

  • Founded in 1874
  • Originally located at 8 East Second Street which is now called 72 West Second Street
  • First President: William Mitchell, a judge of the Supreme Court of Minnesota
  • February 1903: moved to 174 Center Street, president was J.R. Watkins, founder of the J.R. Watkins Medical Company
  • Current building opened in 1916 after two years of construction, at 204 Main Street
  • Upper floor contains a museum of African safari trophies and guns acquired by E.L. King and wife Grace Watkins King
  • 2018: name changed to WNB Financial
