Nathaniel Penick LeSueur was born in Nashville, Tennessee on June 20, 1860, to Charles H. and Frances (Davis) LeSueur. Nathaniel was raised in east Nashville, in the Edgefield community, and attended the local schools including the Hughes & Mims Edgefield Male Academy. His name appears in the 1877-78 Vanderbilt University student listing. He began his business career as a clerk for B. S. Rhea and Company, a Nashville grain dealer. On the 1880 census, he is listed as a bookkeeper and the city directory has his employer as Kinkade, Handy and Company. By 1883 he was a bookkeeper for the American National Bank of Nashville, charter 3032, and by 1886 he had been promoted to Teller. On March 25, 1891, he was elected Paying Teller for American National.

On January 12, 1898, he was elected Assistant Cashier from the position of Receiving Teller, and just a few months later, on July 27, 1898, he was elected Cashier after the death of the previous Cashier, Albert W. Harris. Nathaniel was somewhat active in Masonic affairs in and around Nashville. On August 28, 1918, Nathaniel resigned as Cashier of American National to spend more time on his other business interests, and was then appointed Vice-President of American National. Nathaniel had become President of the Hermitage Laundry around this same time, and he chose to spend more of his professional energy here . On February 8, 1919, he married Mary Ellen (Murray) Matthews. Melle, as she was known, had been widowed and brought a son into the marriage. She became very active in the Nashville society scene.

On January 1, 1925, the Nashville Building & Loan Association opened with Nathaniel as President. This business was located on the 6th floor of the Stahlman building in Nashville, while the American National Bank occupied the first floor. Nathaniel's health began to deteriorate, and this forced him to relinquish his role as President of the Nashville Building & Loan on January 9, 1928. He stayed on the with the Board of Directors, until he died of pneumonia in City View Sanitarium in Nashville, on January 30, 1929. Nathaniel was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Nashville.

Nathaniel was a distant cousin to the actress Joan Crawford, born Lucille Fay LeSueur. Her father, Thomas E LeSueur was from Nashville and listed his occupation as a plasterer, the same as Charles LeSueur, Nathaniel's father. Joan was born around 1904 in San Antonio, Texas, but we don't know for sure as she hid her true age.
