Remsen is located in Plymouth County in northwest Iowa. Remsen was platted by the Iowa Falls and Sioux City Railroad Town Land and Lot Company August 28, 1876, and was incorporated in the spring of 1889.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Remsen was 835 in 1900, rising slightly to 1,181 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,762 in 2000, and the current population is estimated at 1,621 (2018).
