Fonda is located in Pocahontas County. The town was originally called Marvin. However Marvin was deemed too similar to Manson, Iowa and due to mail being mixed up, town officials changed the name to Fonda in 1874.

During the National Bank Note Era (1863-1935), the population of Fonda was 1,684 in 1880, dropping to 1,027 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,684 back in 1880, and the current (and lowest) population is estimated at 575 (2019).
