Biography

  • Name: Edward Ross Burr
  • Birth: December 20, 1873 Nashville, TN
  • Death: May 11, 1940 Nashville, TN
  • Spouse: Mary Elizabeth (Parkes) Burr (1881-1965) (Married 1901)

Edward Ross Burr was born December 20, 1873, in Nashville, Tennessee, to Eugene and Evelyn Bradford Burr. He grew up in Nashville and went to school in the local schools. There is no record of him attending a university. He began his professional life as a runner for the Union Bank & Trust Company of Nashville, a state chartered bank, in 1891. The 1892 Nashville city directory has him listed as a clerk at the bank, and the 1893 directory as a bookkeeper, where he is also listed as in the 1900 census.

On June 12, 1901, he married Mary Elizabeth Parkes in Nashville. On January 20, 1905, he was promoted to Assistant Cashier at the Union Bank & Trust, and exactly 4 years later was elected Cashier. Union Bank & Trust was a very successful bank, and they built a brand new building, complete with a $35,000 safe and a marble lobby. The building was completed and opened on May 10, 1910, and it no doubt led to some banking jealousy with some of the other banks. As a result, the Union Bank & Trust was consolidated into the American National Bank of Nashville, charter 3032, on October 5, 1911, and American National moved into the new bank building. Edward was brought into the new bank as Assistant Cashier.

On August 28, 1918, he was elected Cashier of American National and he held that position until January 19, 1921, when he was elected Vice-President after American National had acquired the Cumberland Valley National Bank of Nashville, charter 9659. Edward was tasked with building the trust department for American National and he became Vice-President of both the bank and of the trust company. He stayed with American National until the winter of 1932-33, when he decided to resign and do a bit of traveling with his wife. Upon return, in June, 1933, he was elected Vice-President of the Third National Bank in Nashville, charter 13103, where he went to work with one of his old friends, Watkins Crockett, from his days at the Union Bank and Trust. He stayed with Third National until his death. Also in June, 1933, he was elected to the Vanderbilt University Board of Hospital Managers.

Edward was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and he was elected Grand Master of Tennessee in 1930. Edward attended a baseball game in the old Sulphur Dell stadium in Nashville on May 9, 1940, between New Orleans and Nashville. He suffered a cerebral hemorrhage while at the game and was taken back home, where he died on May 11, 1940. Edward was buried in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Nashville.
