William Crockett Dibrell was born in Sparta, Tennessee, on May 7, 1844. He was the son of a future Confederate General and member of the U.S. Congress, George G. Dibrell. William was raised in Sparta, and when he was 16 years old, he was elected bookkeeper of the branch Bank of Tennessee at Sparta, due to the influence of his father. He stayed with this bank until near the close of the Civil War. He then went to work for the Hugh Douglas & Company dry goods wholesalers in Louisville, Kentucky, and when the company moved to Nashville, he moved with them. From 1880 to 1883 he was a partner in the dry goods firm Thomas, Dibrell, Morgan & Company.

He became a director and secretary of the Bon Air Coal, Land, and Lumber Company on July 18, 1902. His father was heavily into coal and lumber and no doubt this job was due to his influence and friendships. William was responsible for building rail lines that ran to the mines from Sparta, and later in his life he used this experience to further rail lines in the Nashville area. He also served as tax assessor for Davidson County, where Nashville is located.

William was elected to the Board of Directors of the Fourth National Bank of Nashville, charter 1669, in 1883, and served continuously on the Board until his death in 1921. On January 11, 1911, he was elected President of Fourth National, and agreed to serve for a short time. He was also involved with his own businesses, and being a bank president was time consuming. Fourth National Bank merged with First National Bank of Nashville, charter 150, on July 9, 1912. William was at that time elected Vice-President of this new bank, named the Fourth & First National Bank of Nashville, which operated under charter 1669.

William stayed with the bank until his death on October 10, 1921, aged 77 years. At that time, he was also Secretary of the Murray-Dibrell Shoe Company. William died due to a blood clot after surgery, and he was buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery in Nashville. William was the older brother to Frank S. Dibrell, who was President of the Hermitage National Bank of Nashville, charter 9532, from 1909-1910.
