The Spring Valley National Bank of Spring Valley, OH (1905 - 1955) was the only national bank to serve the small farming community of Spring Valley in Greene County.

Early History

Spring Valley National Bank was founded on September 12, 1905 with the minimum $25,000 required capital. It originally operated out of a rented building, but in 1910 was able to construct its own building on lot no. 4, Pike Street. [1] The Spring Valley National Bank primarily served Spring Valley and Bellbrook residents. [2]

Bank History

In 1917, the bank brokered the sale of $24,000 in bonds for the Spring Valley Township Rural School District. The proceeds of the bonds were to be used for building an additional school building, furnishing seats, black boards, and heating and ventilating systems for the two buildings.[3]

In 1955, the Spring Valley National Bank merged with the nearby Citizens First National Bank of Xenia. The combined institution held assets of $9,262,552.61. [4]

The bank building pictured above was remodeled in 1970.[5]

A bank employee recollected in 1976 a time some point after the merger when workmen accidentally triggered the tear gas bomb in the Spring Valley branch. The effects apparently did not subside for several days. [6]
