Samuel J. Keith was born January 20, 1831, in Jackson County, Tennessee, to Alexander E. Keith and Mary Clark McAdow Keith. At around 16 years of age, he moved to Gainesboro, Tennessee where he learned to clerk in the country store of Bransford and Settle. He moved to Nashville around 1849 and was involved in the tobacco trade. From 1855 to 1858 he was involved with the wholesale grocery business of Morris & Matthews, and in 1864 he entered the grocery business with John Sperry. In 1865 he married Miss Elizabeth Bellsnyder in Nashville. He moved to New Orleans on January 1, 1866 and stayed until the fall of 1877, when he moved back to Nashville. There are newspaper accounts of him working in the leaf tobacco business in mid 1878, and as a member of the Nashville Tobacco Board.

On December 2, 1878, he was elected President of the First National Bank of Nashville, charter 150. On January 13, 1880, First National Bank absorbed the Mechanics National Bank of Nashville, charter 2200, and Samuel became Vice-President of the merged institution. Samuel was also President of the National Manufacturing Company in 1883. On November 30, 1882, he was elected president of 4th National Bank, charter 1669, and served in that capacity until his death. He died July 17, 1909, while visiting his son in Ridgetop, Tennessee, and is buried at Mt. Olivet cemetery in Nashville.
