Town History
Pierce City was laid out in 1870 as a stop on the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad and was originally spelled Peirce City, named for Andrew Peirce, Jr. of Boston, president of the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. The Pierce spelling was used erroneously by the United States Postal Service and adopted officially in the 1930s. It had one National Bank chartered during the Bank Note Era, and it issued National Bank Notes.

Established in October of 1873 as the Lawrence County Bank, it was succeeded in 1887 by the Peirce City Bank with a capital of $10,000. Later it was changed to the Peirce City National Bank with a capital stock of $50,000. On January 13, 1910 the bank name was changed to The First National Bank of Peirce City, Missouri. The bank building is located at 100 W. Commercial Street and was constructed in 1892 from designs by Jerome B. Legg a St. Louis architect. The building was heavily damaged during a tornado in May of 2003, that caused the collapse of the rear wall and also necessitated removal of part of the corner tower. Of the original bank interior little remains, but the old walk-in vault.
