On May 9, 1865, The National Bank of Virginia of Richmond, capital $500,000, was authorized to commence business. The directors were Reuben Ragland, John B. Morton, John M. Lamb, George W. Gilliam, David Currie, S.T. Suit, Chas. Gallagher, Robt. W. Hughes, and Geo. T. May. The bank was in the United States Custom House with entrance on Bank Street.

On January 11, 1870, stockholders elected the following directors: A.F. Harvey, C.T. Wortham, T.W. McCance, O.H. Chalkley, J.B. Wilson, T.C. Williams, James W. Allison, E.O. Nolting, James M. Talbott, W.K. Watts, Wm. H. Palmer, George Lee, and Peyton Wise. The officers were A.F. Harvey, president; J.B. Morton, cashier; J.W. Lockwood, teller; John A. Collins, general bookkeeper, F.M. Wise, individual bookkeeper from A to J; William Ott, individual bookkeeper from K to Z; O.S. Morton, discount clerk and notary; and J.W. Slade, runner. In December 1870, J. Wells Lockwood, formerly of Alexandria, was appointed cashier of the National Bank of Virginia at Richmond.

In January 1876, the following directors were elected for the ensuing year: E.O. Nolting, T.W. McCance, W.H. Palmer, H.K. Ellyson, John F. Allen, J.W. Allison, L.B. Tatum, T. William Pemberton, James T. Gray, W.K. Watts, Claiborne Watkins, E.A. Saunders, and T.C. Williams. The board met and unanimously re-elected Mr. Nolting president.

J.T. Keesee, bookkeeper of the National Bank of Virginia, defaulted for about $23,000, nearly all of which was made good by his friends and sureties. Keesee, who had charge of the individual accounts, had hidden his crime by false entries which he had carried on for several years. He was reported to have left for parts unknow.

In July 1899, the directors were James N. Boyd, Robert S. Bosher, George L. Christian, S.H. Hawes, Fred. R. Nolting, H. Theodore Ellyson, Frank D. Williams, George R. Cannon, Benjamin P. Alsop, and T. Archibald Cary. The officers were George L. Christian, president; Frederick E. Nolting, vice president; J.W. Lockwood, cashier; and O.S. Morton, assistant cashier. The bank, located at the NW corner of Main and Eleventh Streets, had capital of $300,000 and surplus of $50,000.

The Citizens' Exchange was organized on January 14, 1898, and located on Ninth and Main Streets.  In July 1899, the bank had capital of $200,000 and surplus and undivided profits of $11,000.29.  W.M. Habliston was president and T.K. Sands, cashier.  The Directors were John Addison, Frank A. Davenport, R. Lancaster Williams, J.H. Capers, T.L. Alfriend R.G. Rennolds, J.W. Rothert T.H. Ellett, W. Otto Nolting, B. Rand. Wellford, H.M. Vaughan, and W.M. Habliston. 

On September 6, 1899, stockholders of the National Bank of Virginia met and approved the consolidation with the Citizens' Exchange Bank of Richmond. They also ordered that the capital stock be increased from $300,000 to $500,000. The following were elected as directors: Judge George L. Christian, F.E. Nolting, F.D. Williams, T.A. Cary, James N. Boyd, S.H. Hawes, H.T. Ellyson, B.P. Alsop, George R. Cannon, Robert S. Bosher, B. Rand Wellford, John Addison, J.H. Capers, R. Lancaster Williams, R.G. Rennolds, T.H. Ellett, J.W. Rothert, H.M. Vaughan, T.L. Alfriend, and W.M. Habliston.

In January 1912, the stockholders elected the following board of directors: E.B. Addison, E.L. Bemies, T.H. Ellett, H. Theodore Ellyson, George L. Christian, T.A. Cary, Carl H. Nolting, William T. Reed, J.W. Rothers, Wm. Northrop, T.C. Williams, Jr., E.C. Laird, R.H. Lindsay, W.P. Glinn, Eppa Hunton, Jr., R.G. Rennolds, W.H. Habliston, B.P. Alsop, B.R. Wellford, S.W. Travers, James G. Tinsley, John T. Wilson, James A. Moncure, John Skelton Williams, and F.D. Williams. The directors elected W.M. Habliston, president; John Skelton Williams, vice president; W.M. Addison, cashier; O.S. Morton, W.H. Slaughter, John Tyler, and J.M. Ball, Jr., assistant cashiers.

On July 29, 1912, directors of the First National Bank and the National Bank of Virginia met at noon and unanimously recommended to their respective stockholders that the two institutions be consolidated. A call for stockholders meetings to be held on August 29th was made. By the terms of the consolidation, the National Bank of Virginia would go into voluntary liquidation and and the merged institution would be known as the First National Bank, the capital stock of which was to be increased from $1,000,000 to $2,000,000. The stockholders of the National Bank of Virginia would have the privilege of subscribing for 3 shares of the consolidated bank stock for each 4 shares of their current stock, paying $150 per share for the consolidated bank stock. The directors of the new institution agreed to endorse the following officers: W.M. Habliston, chairman of the board; Colonel John B. Purcell, president; John M. Miller, Jr., vice president; W. Meade Addison, cashier. After consolidation, the First National Bank would be the largest institution of the kind between Philadelphia and New Orleans. The capital as stated would be $2,000,000, surplus $1,000,000 and deposits of between $12 and $14 million. It was expected that the First National would be somewhat delayed in getting into its new building at the corner of Ninth and Main Streets. Original plans did not make provision for the increased force and business that would come with the merger. It was expected the quarters would be ready by November 1st.
