Town History
Oxford is a town in Granville County, North Carolina. It is the county seat of Granville County. The population was 8,628 as of the 2020 census. In 1900 the population was 2,059 growing to 4,101 by 1930.
The town's history dates to 1761, when local legislator Samuel Benton built a plantation home and called it "Oxford." The legislature ordered the area around his plantation to be the seat of Granville County. The town was not incorporated until 1816.
Oxford had four National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and two of those banks issued National Bank Notes.

On July 5, 1907, the comptroller of the currency approved the application to convert the Bank of Granville, at Oxford, into the National Bank of Granville. H.G. Cooper was named as correspondent.
On January 21, 1908, the comptroller of the currency authorized The National Bank of Granville, at Oxford, to commence business. In August 1908, the directors were J.M Currin, F.W. Hancock, J.B. Roller, B.S. Royster, E.T. White, W.B. Ballou, J.H. Bullock, and J.G. Hall. The officers were E.T. White, president; J.M. Currin, vice president; and H.G. Cooper, cashier.
In February 1911, the officers were E.T. White, president; H.G. Cooper, vice president and W.T. Yancey. The bank had capital $60,000, surplus and profits $40,000.
In January 1921, the directors were E.T. White, J.G. Hall, W.B. Ballou, F.W. Hancock, B.S. Royster, H.G. Cooper, W.Z. Mitchell, and Y.T. Yancey. The officers were E.T. White, president; H.G. Cooper, vice president; W.T. Yancey, cashier; E.B. Howard, C.S. Easton, G.B. Phillips, and R.K. Taylor, assistant cashiers.
On May 20, 1929, at a meeting of the stockholders of the First National Bank and the National Bank of Granville, it was voted to consolidate the two banks under the name of the First National Bank of Granville. Col. H.G. Cooper was president of the National Bank of Granville and W.H. Hunt was president of the First National Bank.
