Morris Eagan Barr, Sr. was born in Nashville, Tennessee on April 21, 1891 to Daniel Frances and Mary Ann Eagan Barr. Mary's parents were Irish immigrants that had settled in Pennsylvania. Morris was raised in Nashville and attended the local schools. He lists on the 1940 census that he attended 2 years of post-secondary schools, but a record of this can't be located. We do know that he started working as a runner at age 15 in 1906 for the American National Bank of Nashville, charter 3032. American National would be his only employer.

The city directories show Morris advancing at American National. In 1907 he is listed as a clerk, 1908 as assistant teller, bookkeeper in 1910 and 1911, and paying teller in 1912. On November 27, 1920, Morris married Julia Shannon Ditto. Julia had been married previously, at age 16, and brought a couple sons into this marriage. Morris and Julia had three children together. Their oldest son was Morris Barr, Jr, born in 1924, and second son Richard, born in 1925. A daughter named Julia Ann was born June 7, 1930. Unfortunately, his wife Julia died of leukemia on July 26, 1937. Morris did not remarry.

By the early 1920's Morris had been promoted to Assistant Cashier at American National, and in 1925 he was again promoted to Assistant Vice-President. On March 2, 1927, he was elected Cashier of American National and stayed in that position until he retired on December 31, 1956, after 50 years at the bank. Morris died May 31, 1971 in a local hospital, and is buried in Calvary Cemetery, in Nashville.
