Town History
Maryville is the county seat of Nodaway County, which is located in northwestern Missouri. The town was platted on September 1, 1845. Maryville's name originates from the town's first postmaster, Amos Graham. Graham was one of the original settlers of what would later become downtown Maryville, and the city was named after his wife, Mary. The city was incorporated in 1856, annulled in 1857, reincorporated in 1859, annulled during the Civil War, reincorporated in 1869, disincorporated again in 1869 and finally formally incorporated on July 19, 1869, when the Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Council Bluffs Railroad arrived.
During the National Bank Note Era (1863-1935), the population of Maryville was 1,682 in 1870, growing to 5,217 in 1930. It's highest population was 11,972 in 2010, and the current population is estimated at 11,599 (2019).
Maryville had two National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and both of those banks issued National Bank Notes.

The Maryville National Bank was organized in 1889, but its history reaches back to 1874, when the banking business of Baker Saunders & Company was organized on the northwest corner of North Main and Fourth streets. The owners of the first banking house being George S. Saunders, John Saunders and Richard Saunders. In 1880 Richard Saunders sold his interest to George S. Baker and John Saunders. In 1887 George L. Wilfley and Elmer Fraser secured an interest in the business. John Saunders died in 1889 and the business was reorganized as the Maryville National Bank, with George S. Baker, president; George L. Wilfley, cashier. From 1892 to 1896 John Lieber was president and was succeeded in 1896 by Mr. Wilfley, and Elmer Fraser became the cashier. In the month of March 1902, S.G. Gilliam, C.D. Bellows and W.C. Pierce secured a large block of the stock and were elected directors. Mr. Pierce succeeded Mr. Fraser as cashier. Another change effected in January,1905, when S.H. Kemp who had been cashier in the First National Bank of Maryville for 15 years, was elected cashier to succeed Mr. Pierce. The first charter expired in 1910 and was renewed for a term of 20 more years. The bank's capital in 1910 was $100,000.
