  • Death: October 11, 1977, Sumter, SC

Madge M. Lockwood was born on November 14, 1904, at McLeansboro, Illinois. She was the daughter of Joseph L. and Della Evelyn (Sims) Lockwood of Jacksonville, Illinois. Mrs. Della Lockwood was the owner and director of the Lockwood School of Beauty Culture.

Since November 1, 1926, Miss Madge M. Lockwood had detected 12 spurious $20 gold certificates. Having been deceived by the first one, she said that was a lesson that allowed her to rapidly detect 9 counterfeit bills while flipping through a pile of $2,000. Miss Lockwood entered the bank from high school and had been assistant cashier for the past 3 years. Her great ambition was to secure a position in a large city as she liked banking and was anxious to climb in her chosen line of work. Her alertness led to apprehension of John Mayes, a 35-year-old counterfeiter at Murphysboro. Conspiracy charges were also lodged against two Champaign, Illinois, residents, Miss Mary Ayers and Miss Gladys Barnatta Crawford who were jailed.

In June 1936, she completed a trip through Florida and Mississippi as the representative of the cosmetic department of the Walgreen Stores of Chicago. She visited Jacksonville, Illinois for a week in connection with her work and a visit with her mother, Mrs. Della Lockwood of this city.

In 1937, she was a representative of Leon Laraine, cosmetics, as an expert cosmetician.

On Tuesday, October 11, 1977, Mrs. Madge Lockwood VanDeest, 72, died at Tuomey Hospital. Mrs. VanDeest was a past president of the Pilot Club and the Sumter YWCA and was a member of the Sumter YMCA board of directors. She was secretary of the Sunset Country Club Ladies Golf Association and was past financial secretary and a member of the official board of directors of St. Johns Methodist Church.
