Town History

Knoxville is located in Marion County in south central Iowa some 25 miles southeast of Des Moines.

Knoxville was founded in 1845 when Joseph Robinson and James Montgomery, Commissioners from Scott and Wapello County, selected the site for Knoxville and designated it as the county seat. They named Knoxville in honor of General Henry Knox, hero of the Revolutionary War.

Knoxville was duly incorporated as a City in 1855.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Knoxville was 4,697 in 1930. It's highest population was 8,232 in 1990, and the current population is estimated at 7,204 (2018).
