  • Birth: Nov 13, 1875 Sumner County, TN
  • Death: June 30, 1953 Nashville, TN
  • Spouse: Sadie Prince (Cunningham) Joyner (Married 1902)

John Foster Joyner was born November 13, 1875, in Sumner County, Tennessee. He was educated within the county school system. He began his working career as a clerk at the Bank of Goodlettsville (Tennessee) in 1898, and was listed as such in the 1900 census. While employed at the Bank of Goodlettsville, on July 23, 1902, he married Sadie Prince Cunningham. In 1903 he left the Bank of Goodlettsville to help organize the Bank of Greenbriar (Tennessee) where he served first as Assistant Cashier, and then as Cashier. On August 12, 1912, he was elected Cashier of the Broadway National Bank of Nashville, charter 9774.

John did not stay at Broadway National very long, because on December 12, 1913, he left the bank to become a state bank examiner in the newly created state office. On July 11, 1916, he was elected Cashier of the Central Bank & Trust Company of Nashville. Central Bank & Trust became the Central National Bank of Nashville, charter 12276, on November 22, 1922. The Central National Bank of Nashville did not issue national bank notes. By early 1927, John had been promoted to Assistant Vice-President at Central National. On March 23, 1927, stockholders of the Central National Bank agreed to a merger with the Fourth & First National Bank of Nashville, charter 1669 at the time. Four months later, Fourth & First would retake charter 150. John was appointed Vice-President of Fourth & First. Then, due to the failure of the bond house Caldwell and Company in November, 1930, Fourth & First National Bank was absorbed into the American National Bank, charter 3032. John became Assistant Vice-President for the American National Bank at this time.

On September 28, 1933, John was selected to be a bank examiner for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, and then headed the Nashville office of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. On January 24, 1936, John was named as manager of the Nashville Clearing House Association, and he stayed at this employment for the final years of his life. He worked up until the day before he died of heart disease, at his home, on June 30, 1953. John was buried in Spring Hill Cemetery, in Nashville.
