Horace Greely Lipscomb (October 15, 1850 – May 18, 1912)

Biography

Horace Greely Lipscomb was born October 15, 1850, in Franklin County, Tennessee, to Granville Lipscomb (1802-1853) and Jane L. (Breedon) Lipscomb (1807-1885). He was educated in his early life in Franklin County, and moved to Nashville at the age of 18 to further his education. He graduated from the University of Nashville in 1873.

On December 16, 1874, Horace married Martha Henrie Zellner in Brentwood, Tennessee. Henrie was the younger sister of his brother Davids' wife, Margaret Ophelia (Zellner) Lipscomb. They would have eight children together. Horace began his professional life by working as a business manager for his brother David. David published a religious magazine known as the "Gospel Advocate", and Horace worked for him until 1879. In the 1880 City Directory, Horace shows up as a partner in the hardware business Dodd, Dudley and Lipscomb. That firm unfolded in 1891. Horace was elected as a Director of the Tennessee Central Railway about this time. The 1893 City Directory shows that Horace had by then founded his own hardware company called H. G. Lipscomb and Company. There are many mentions of this company in the Nashville newspapers of the time.

Horace was elected as a Director of the Fourth National Bank of Nashville, charter 1669, on January 12, 1892. He would stay as a Director until December 7, 1910, when he was elected President of The Broadway National Bank of Nashville, charter 9774. All this time he remained President of H.G Lipscomb & Company.

Horace was a large man, and suffered from diabetes. Unfortunately there were no treatments for diabetes in the early 1900's. On May 18, 1912, he died at his home. His death certificate lists the cause of death as nephritis, but today it might be called diabetic nephropathy. He was buried in Mt. Olivet cemetery, in Nashville.

Horace was a brother to David Lipscomb, the founder and namesake of David Lipscomb University, in Nashville. H. G. Lipscomb and Company is still in operation as a family business in Nashville.
