Frank Mitchell Farris, Sr., was born November 23, 1890 in Nashville, Tennessee. He was the youngest of four boys, and his mother died when he was young. His early schooling was received at the old Bowen Preparatory School in Nashville, where he graduated in 1909. After attending Vanderbilt University for a year, he was a student at the University of Michigan for two years in 1910-12, until he left to enter business.

Frank was a banker his whole life, beginning as a clerk for the State Bank & Trust Company in 1912, and then advancing to Assistant Cashier in 1913 and he was promoted to Cashier in 1914. He married Mary Frances Lellyett on November 10, 1914, in Nashville. From 1915-1921 he served as Assistant Cashier at Cumberland Valley National Bank (charter 9659), and stayed on after American National Bank (charter 3032) merged with Cumberland Valley. He managed the Cumberland Valley branch of the American National Bank until 1925, when he was promoted to cashier of American National Bank. His signature appears on notes issued between 1925 and February 1927.

Frank's father, Willis Manning Farris, was killed in the infamous great train wreck at Dutchman's Curve in west Nashville, on July 9, 1918. This wreck occurred when two trains of the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis railroad hit head on. Over 100 people were killed, and it remains the deadliest train wreck in American history. Frank enjoyed breeding, raising, and showing show ponies and attended many shows throughout the south. He was a past-President of the Nashville Clearing House Association, and he served as a Director of the Nashville Branch of the Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank.

In 1927, he resigned from American National to help organize the Third National Bank in Nashville, charter 13103. Frank served as Vice-President, Executive Vice-President, and was elected as President of Third National on January 10, 1935, where he remained until his death. Frank Mitchell Farris died from a heart attack at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville at age 59, on April 19, 1950, and is buried in Woodlawn Memorial Park, in Nashville..
