Town History
Warren is the county seat of Warren County, PA, located along the Allegheny River. After the Revolutionary War, General William Irvine and Andrew Ellicott were sent to the area to lay out a town in 1795. It was named after Major General Joseph Warren. David Beaty discovered oil in Warren in 1875 while drilling for natural gas in his wife's flower garden. Oil came to dominate the city's economy. Many of the town's large Victorian homes were built with revenue generated by the local oil and timber industries.
The population was 9,404 at the 2020 census. As of the census of 1900, there were 8,043 people, and the population peaked in 1940 at 14,891.
Warren had three National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and all three of those banks issued National Bank Notes.

On August 14, 1953, stockholders of the First National Bank of Warren were advised that The Warren National Bank offered to purchase the 2,000 outstanding shares of the First National Bank capital stock. To effect the merger, holders of at least 75% of the stock were required to accept the offer. All First National Bank employees would be retained. L.A. Branch was cashier, Wallace H. Cowden was president, and M.F. Cowden was vice president. Assistant Cashiers were A.L. Langlon and A.H. Templeton while Tellers were C.W. Anderson, A.H. Bengston, and R.F. Dietsch. Effective October 30, 1953, The First National Bank of Warren and the Warren National Bank merged to form an institution whose resources totaled approximately $34 million. Clare J. Crary was Chairman of the Board and Albert L. Rasmussen remained president of the resulting institution, The Warren National Bank, Charter 4879.
