Newton is a city in and the county seat of Harvey County, Kansas. Newton is located 25 miles north of Wichita.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended a main line from Emporia westward to Newton by July 1871. The town soon became an important railroad shipping point of Texas cattle. The city was also founded in 1871 and named after Newton, Massachusetts, home of some of the Santa Fe stockholders.

As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 18,602. In 1880 the population was 2,601 and by 1930 it was 11,034.

Newton had four National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and all four of those banks issued National Bank Notes.

The Newton City Bank planned to merge into the First National Bank of Newton with a full paid up capital of $50,000. The Newton City Bank was organized in November 1880 with capital paid in of $10,000 and the stockholders continually added to the capital with the view to convert to a national bank. The officers of the City Bank were S. Lehman, president; Hon. S.R. Peters, vice president; and G. W. Holmes, cashier. The directors were T.E. Neal, A.B. Gilbert, F.S. Steinkirchner, S. Lehman, S.R. Peters, and G.W. Holmes.

On September 20, 1882, the comptroller of the Currency, John Jay Knox, authorized the First National Bank to commence the business of banking. The officers were S. Lehman, president; Hon. S.R. Peters, vice president; and A.B. Gilbert, cashier. The directors were S. Lehman, T.E. Neal, Gustave Harder, B. McKee, E.B. Fowler, S.R. Peters, Bernard Regier, M.L. Stewart and A.B. Gilbert.

In 1884, the officers were S. Lehman, president; E.B. Fowler, vice president; and A.B. Gilbert, cashier. The directors were S. Lehman, T.E. Neal, Gustave Harder, B. McKee, E.B. Fowler, S.R. Peters, Bernard Regier, M.L. Stewart and A.B. Gilbert and F.S Steinkirchner.

On December 2, 1898, noticed was given to customers of the First State Bank that the business was sold to the First National Bank of Newton, and all deposits would be paid and notes due would be collected by the same. C.M Beachy was president and John B. Olinger, cashier of the First State Bank. The First National promised persons who had been doing business at the First State Bank good treatment and careful attention to wants. The officers of the First National Bank were S. Lehman, president; C.W. Goss, vice president; A.B. Gilbert, cashier; and Theo. Kaestner, assistant cashier.
