Essex is located in Page County in southwest Iowa. Essex was platted in 1870. The Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad arrived in Essex in 1871.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Essex was 710 in 1900, staying fairly constant with 806 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,001 in 1980, and the current population is estimated at 752 (2018).
