William Thomas Hardison, Sr. was born March 20, 1839 in Marshall County (near Lewisburg) Tennessee, to Humphrey and Harriet (Wollard) Hardison. Sometime before 1860, Humphrey moved his family to Maury County, Tennessee, and bought a farm. In the 1860 census, the family is living in Maury County and William is listed as a teacher. On July 5, 1861, William enlisted in Maury County as a private in Company E, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry (Confederate). On November 14, 1862, he transferred to Company E of the 1st Tennessee Cavalry, and finished the war as a captain. He served under both Nathan Bedford Forrest and Joseph Wheeler.

On November 29, 1867, William married Martha Gizzella McLean, and in the 1870 census they are living in Obion County, Tennessee, in the far northwest corner of the state, operating a dry goods store. Sometime between 1870 and 1875, William moved his family to Nashville, Tennessee because the 1880 census lists him as partner in a wholesale grocery business known as McLean, Hardison, and White, and the 1875 Nashville City Directory has him operating a grocery at 56 Broad (now Broadway) Street. William left the wholesale grocery business by the 1890 census and was then the owner of W. T. Hardison and Company, a building supply company he owned with his son. He was also President of the Enterprise Soap Works in Nashville.

In 1906, Alvin Potter talked William into serving as President of a new state chartered bank he was organizing in Nashville called The Broadway Bank & Trust Company. William's business was located on Broadway, and he would be able to bring many other merchants to this new bank. The bank served the businesses in southern Nashville and became very successful. In a year, it doubled its' capital, and then doubled it again a short time later. Soon, Broadway Bank & Trust was converted to a national bank named The Broadway National Bank, charter 9774, and it was chartered on June 8, 1910. William was elected the first president of the bank, at age 71.

There are reports of William being ill in the Nashville newspapers in the early 1900's. Unfortunately, he was forced to resign as President of The Broadway National Bank on December 7, 1910, due to his poor health. William died from heart disease at his home at 3208 West End Avenue, in Nashville, on July 20, 1919 at the age of 80 years, and is buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
