William Ervin Dunlap (March 10, 1872 – December 24, 1947) had a 50 year career as a banker in East Liverpool, OH. He served the Citizens National Bank as assistant cashier and the First National Bank in the positions of assistant cashier, cashier, and vice president. He was treasurer of the East Liverpool Red Cross for more than 20 years and served a brief stint on the board of education.

Biography

Early life and family

Dunlap was born in Fox Township near Salineville, OH and was educated in Salineville schools. He moved to East Liverpool in 1886 to work in the potteries. After studying business in Cleveland and East Liverpool he was named assistant cashier when the Citizens National Bank organized in 1897.[1]

On October 16, 1907, Dunlap married Olive Mary Connell in Steubenville.[2]

Banking career

In 1906, Dunlap left the Citizens National Bank to join the First National Bank.[3] In April 1906, upon retirement of N. G. Macrum, Thomas Fisher was promoted from assistant cashier to cashier and Dunlap was officially named assistant cashier of the First National Bank.[4] In 1923, Fisher would be promoted to vice president and Dunlap was promoted to cashier. Starting in 1934, Dunlap would serve the dual role of cashier and vice president. J. W. Smith would succeed Dunlap as cashier in 1941 but Dunlap would remain vice president until his death in 1948.

In 1927, a check forger attempts to pass a check with Dunlap's forged signature as cashier.[5]

In 1915, Dunlap was listed as a director for the Federal Building and Loan.[6] He may had served this institution continuously through the 1940s. He was reelected director in 1939[7] and held the position of executive vice president in 1941.[8]

Dunlap often attended Ohio Bankers Association conventions in the 1930s and 1940s. In 1936, he left East Liverpool for two weeks to attend the national banks convention in San Francisco.[9]

In November 1942, a dinner banquet was held to honor Dunlap's 45th year in the banking business.[10]

Other career highlights

Starting in 1908, Dunlap was listed as the clerk for the East Liverpool Board of Education.[11] He would become secretary in 1910[12] and as secretary he was involved in purchasing a new school site.[13] He chose to retire from the board shortly thereafter.[14]

Dunlap was treasurer of the East Liverpool Red Cross from at least 1919[15] until at least 1940.[16] During an overlapping period, Dunlap was also treasurer of the Salvation Army.[17]

Later life and death

William Dunlap died at home of a heart attack on December 24, 1947.[18] His wife Olive was named executrix of his will.[19]
