Early life and family

William Culbertson Pomeroy was born in Roxbury, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. At an early age he moved to Juniata County where he attended the public schools and worked in his father's store in boyhood. When he was nineteen years of age he entered the Tuscarora Academy and graduated in 1873.

He was married to Ellen Blanche “Ellie” Crawford the daughter of Erasmus Darwin Crawford and Pamelia Jane Jackman Crawford. The Pomeroy's had five children, four girls and one boy. Their son, banker Darwin Crawford Pomeroy received his maternal grandfather's middle and surname and would follow his father into banking as the long-serving Cashier of The Port Royal National Bank (Charter 11373) until his death in 1935.

Banking career

William began his banking career in the Juniata Valley Bank of Mifflintown, Juniata County, as a clerk and then cashier (1873-1876), and vice president (1876-1894). He became the cashier of the Port Royal Bank, Juniata County (1894-1907); president of the First National Bank of New Bloomfield, Perry County (1898-1907); and a director of the First National Bank of Middleburg, Snyder County. Along with Hon. L.E. Atkinson, he helped organize the Perry County National Bank of Newport in 1899. He was a director until the bank merged with the First National Bank of Newport in March 1905.

Political career

In 1882 he was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives as a Republican. He was not a candidate for reelection to the House in 1884 and ran an unsuccessful campaign for the State Senate in 1892. He was reelected to the House in 1904 and 1906 and died while in office February 21, 1907.

Later life and death

The Hon. William C. Pomeroy died at his residence in Port Royal on a Thursday morning, February 21, 1907. He contracted pneumonia the previous week in Harrisburg while on duty in the House. The funeral took place on Monday the 25th with interment at Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery, Mifflintown, Juniata County. Pall bearers included James T. Alter, Cashier of the First National Bank of New Bloomfield and H.E. Sheibley of Port Royal.
