Biography

  • Name: John Robertson Wilson
  • Birth: January 29, 1867 Nashville, TN
  • Death: April 30, 1936 Nashville, TN
  • Spouse: Viola Pervis (Bailey) Elam Wilson (1881-1958)

John Robertson Wilson was born on January 29, 1867 in Nashville, Tennessee. His father, Dr. William L. Wilson, was a cotton planter, Confederate veteran, and physician. John was raised in Nashville and attended local schools.

The first employment we can find for him comes from the 1886 Nashville city directory, where he is employed as a bookkeeper for the American National Bank of Nashville, charter 3032. John remained at American National for over 30 years, being promoted to clerk, teller, receiving teller, and head teller. On July 16, 1918, he was elected Cashier of the Tennessee-Hermitage National Bank of Nashville, charter 9532. John resigned as Cashier of Tennessee-Hermitage due to ill health on May 22, 1926. Later, he worked as a clerk for the Tennessee Highway Department.

John married Viola Pervis Bailey on August 7, 1915. This was her second marriage and in the 1920 census they are living together with her son, who retained the last name of his father. In the 1926 city directory they are married, but by the 1930 census she is divorced and living in Kansas City, Missouri. Interestingly, on John's death certificate, his brother listed his marital status as "single". John did not have any children with Viola. As he got older his infirmity continued to progress until he died of heart disease at the Nashville home of his sister on April 30, 1936, and was buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Nashville.
