Town History

Florida is a village in Orange County, New York. The population was 2,571 as of the 2000 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, NY-NJ-CT-PA Combined Statistical Area. The village is located in the town of Warwick, with two small northern portions in the town of Goshen. Florida is at the convergence of Routes 17A, 25, and 94.

The part of the Wawayanda Patent which contained the present day village was known as the Florida Tract. The initial settlement on the site was known as Brookland, but was given its current name in the 1760s based upon an abundance of red flowers in the area. Florida, in Latin, Floridius Aetas, means land covered with red flowers. It was the birthplace of William H. Seward, U.S. Secretary of State (1861-1869).

Florida had two National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and both of those banks issued National Bank Notes.
