Vinita was founded in 1870 by Col. Elias Cornelius Boudinot and was incorporated in Indian Territory in 1898. In 1869 the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroad survey crew had reached the south bank of Big Cabin Creek. Col. Boudinot shrewdly staked out a town-site near the planned rail crossing of the Big Cabin Creek by Atlantic and Pacific surveys. Directors of the A&P switched the crossing, apparently with the blessing of Chief Lewis Downing and the Cherokee National Council, creating Downingville. Boudinot, however, was soon cut-in for one third of the new town-site and permitted to name the new town Vinita. So Downingville and Vinita came into existence about 1871, and they formed primarily a Native American community. The origin of the name "Vinita" is after Boudinot's friend, sculptor Vinnie Ream. Vinita is along the path of the Texas Road cattle trail, and the later Jefferson Highway of the early National Trail System, both roughly along the path of U.S. Route 69 through Oklahoma today. Early in its history, cattle ranching in the surrounding countryside contributed heavily to Vinita's economy. When Craig County was created at statehood, Vinita was designated as the county seat. As of the 2000 census, the population was 6,472,  In 1900 the population was 2,339, growing to a peak in 1980 of 6,740.

Vinita had four National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and all four of those banks issued National Bank Notes.
