Town History
Tipton is the county seat of Cedar County in east central Iowa. Tipton was platted in 1840 and was named for General John Tipton, a personal friend of the founder, Henry W. Higgins.
The city was incorporated on January 27, 1857.
During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Tipton was 1,299 in 1880, climbing to 2,513 in 1900. Its highest and current population was 3,223 in 2018.
