Tarkio is a city in Tarkio Township, Atchison County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,506 at the 2020 census. It was platted in 1880 and incorporated in 1881. The name "Tarkio" is from a Native American word meaning "place where walnuts grow". Historically, the economy of the city was based on agriculture and its status as a college town. The First National Bank of Tarkio was organized in 1883 with nearly 100 shareholders and David Rankin was the first president. The bank was under the control of the Rankin family interests until 1930 and it issued national currency over a period of 53 years.  In 1936, it was acquired by Lewis Schollian and Claude Templeton until it was sold to American Bank, Inc. David Rankin, a community stalwart in agriculture, was also active in other financial circles, serving as president of the First National Bank of Monmouth, Illinois and as a partner of the Savings Bank of Burlington Iowa. The banking firm of Rankin, Stevenson and Co., of Tarkio, was established when R.M. Stevenson, the cashier of the First National Bank of Monmouth, moved to Tarkio.

On Wednesday, May 22, 1918, at a meeting of the directors of the First National Bank and the Rankin Land Loan Co., officers were elected to fill the places made vacant by the death of W.F. Rankin. John A. Rankin, Sr., was elected president of the First National Bank and also of the Rankin Land & Loan Co., and J.W. Hanna was made vice president. J.D. Rankin was elected as a director of the bank and loan company.
