Rippey is located in Greene County in west central Iowa. Rippey got its start in the year 1870, following construction of the Des Moines Valley Railroad through that territory.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Rippey was 395 in 1900, staying fairly constant with 357 in 1930. It's highest population was 421 in 1940, and the current population is estimated at 273 (2019).
