Primghar is located in O'Brien County in northwest Iowa.

Primghar was incorporated in 1888 and is the county seat of O'Brien County.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Primghar was 519 in 1890, staying fairly constant with 733 in 1910, with a slight bump to 962 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,152 in 1950, and the current population is estimated at 876 (2016).
