Parker is the county seat of Turner County, located in south-eastern South Dakota. The town was established in 1879 as county seat, and incorporated as a city in 1883. The name Parker was the maiden name of a railroad official's wife.

During the National Bank Note Era (1863-1935), the population of Parker was 728 in 1890, growing to 1,229 in 1930. Its highest population was 1,288 in 1920, and the current population is 1,194 (2020).

Parker had one National Bank chartered during the Bank Note Era, and it issued National Bank Notes.
