Indianola is located in Warren County in central Iowa.

Indianola was founded in 1849 as the county seat of Warren County. The town was located near the geographic center of the new county. The town's name was taken from a newspaper account of a Texas town of the same name.

Indianola was incorporated in 1863.

Indianola is home to Simpson College.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Indianola was 1,428 in 1870, increasing to 3,261 in 1900, and staying fairly constant with 3,488 in 1930. It's highest and current population is 16,071 (2018).
