Town History
Hastings is the county seat of Dakota County in eastern Minnesota, with a small portion of the town in Washington County. Originally called Oliver's Grove, Hastings was incorporated in 1857. It was named for the first elected governor of the state of Minnesota, Henry Hastings Sibley. The name "Hastings" was drawn out of a hat from suggestions placed in it by several of the original founders.
Located at the junction of the St. Croix & Mississippi Rivers, with the nearby Vermillion River Falls to provide water power, Hastings was a shipping and milling center for many years.
During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Hastings was 1653 in 1860, growing steadily to 5,086 in 1930. It's highest and current population is 22,713 (2018).
Hastings had three National Banks chartered during the Bank Note Era, and all three of those banks issued National Bank Notes. Hastings also had two Obsolete Banks that issued Obsolete Bank Notes during the Obsolete Bank Note Era (1782-1866).
