Town History
Gary is located in Deuel County in eastern South Dakota. A post office called Gary was established in 1874. Gary was platted by the railroad in 1877, and incorporated in 1917. It was named for H. B. Gary, a postal official. An early name for the town was State Line.
During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Gary was 277 in 1890, increasing to 543 in 1930. It's highest population was 588 in 1920, and the current population is estimated at 226 (2018).
Gary's first bank was the Deuel County Bank, established around 1882, with Irving A. Sibley as President and C.L. Shelley as Cashier.
