Town History

Elkader is located in Clayton County in northeast Iowa. Elkader was platted in 1846. The town is known for its bridge over the Turkey River, said to be the largest stone arch bridge west of the Mississippi River. It, and many of the local buildings, are made from locally quarried sandstone. The town's grocery store, Wilke's, is the oldest continuously operated grocery store west of the Mississippi, as well. Elkader also features a renovated Victorian-era opera house, and the Turkey River Mall, a 29-room hotel converted into antique stores.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Elkader was 697 in 1870, nearly doubling to 1,321 in 1900, and staying consistent at 1,382 in 1930. It's highest population was 1,688 in 1980, and the current population is estimated at 1,215 (2018).
