Town History
Egan is located in Moody County in eastern South Dakota. Egan was platted in April 1880 and incorporated in April 1881. It was supposedly named for a railroad employee.
During the National Bank Note Era (1863-1935), the population of Egan was 399 in 1890, growing to 569 in 1920, and dropping to 419 in 1930. It's highest population was 569 in 1920, and the current population is estimated at 276 (2016).
Egan's first bank was the (private) Bank of Egan, established in October 1881 by Melvin Grigsby and George M. Smith of Sioux Falls, SD.
Egan had one National Bank chartered during the Bank Note Era, and it issued National Bank Notes.
