Erected in 1854 on the site of the old Lawrence Mansion built prior to the Revolution, the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank building was located at 427 Chestnut Street. Here lived: Gen. Henry Knox, Secretary of War, Timothy Pickering, Secretary of State, Col. John Lawrence, member of Congress, and Admiral Lord Howe during the British occupancy of Philadelphia.
