Lewis J. Wilkin was one of the early settlers of Dundee. He was a member of the Yates County Bar and practiced law extensively. He was known throughout Yates County not only as a lawyer, but as a banker, supervisor, justice of the peace and a man of active business affairs. He operated a private bank in his name as early as September 1873. During his busy life he did much toward building up the village and shaping its affairs. He passed away on June 28, 1903.

In February 1880, the Dundee National Bank would begin with capital of $50,000, the stock mostly owned by Penn Yan parties. Lewis J. Wilkin, the private banker would retire from banking having leased his building and sold his safe and fixtures to the national bank. On Thursday, February 19, 1880, officers of the Dundee National Bank were elected at a meeting of the stockholders held in Penn Yan. James Spicer of Dundee was president; Morris F. Sheppard of Penn Yan, vice president; and Frank R. Durry of Penn Yan, cashier. Twelve directors were also elected. The bank would open for business on April 1st.

On November 15, 1883, the building on the west side of Main Street occupied lately by the Dundee National Bank was sold by its owner L.J. Wilkin to James Spicer for $4,500. The Dundee State Bank was cooperating with officials of the National Bank in making the change. Depositors were given the usual 60-days notice to withdraw funds.
