Clarence Carlyle Potter was born June 6, 1887 in Smithville, Tennessee, to William Carroll Potter and Martha Helen (Avant) Potter. William owned a mill and had organized and served as President of the People's Bank of Smithville, a state chartered bank. Clarence was schooled locally and graduated in 1905 from the Castle Heights School in Lebanon, Tennessee, which in 1918 would become the Castle Heights Military Academy. Clarence was the youngest brother of Alvin Edward Potter (1871-1930). Alvin organized both the Broadway National Bank of Nashville, charter 9774, and the Commerce Union Bank of Nashville, a state chartered bank.

Clarence moved to Nashville in 1905, and the earliest mention of him is in the 1906 city directory, where he is working as a bookkeeper. By 1907, he had gained employment at his brother Alvin's bank as a bookkeeper, and Clarence would stay at the Broadway National Bank for the rest of his career. From 1907-1915, he held various bookkeeping and teller positions, learning the skills necessary to run a financial institution. On April 12, 1911, he married Margaret Louise Hutchison, in Nashville, at the age of 23. There are many mentions of Margaret on the society pages of the local newspapers during her marriage to Clarence.

Clarence was elected Assistant Cashier of Broadway National Bank in 1915, and on January 8, 1929, he was again promoted to Assistant Vice-President and Trust Officer. Soon after, due to the sudden death of his brother Alvin, on March 19, 1930 he was elected Cashier and Trust Officer of the Broadway National Bank. On January 2, 1934, he was again promoted to Vice-President and Cashier. He was 46 years old at this time. Clarence enjoyed golfing and entered many tournaments as a member of the Belle Meade Country Club. He was also a resident of Belle Meade, an affluent suburb in southwest Nashville.

On May 20, 1938, Clarence relinquished his duties as Cashier of Broadway National, and was elected Vice-President and Trust Officer. Clarence served as an Exalted Ruler of Lodge 72 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks. He was also a Mason and a deacon in the Westminster Presbyterian Church of Nashville. In the early 1940's, Clarence had begun to suffer from angina, and experienced some mild heart attacks. On February 3, 1942, he died of a heart attack at his home in Belle Meade, at the age of 54. Clarence was laid to rest in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, in Nashville.
