Bedford is located in Taylor County in southwest Iowa.

The community was called "Grove" when a post office was established on June 30, 1855. On June 24, 1856 it was changed to Bedford.

The community was formally established as the county seat of Taylor County by a legislative act in 1853.

During the National Bank Note Era, the population of Bedford was 720 in 1870, rising to 1,977 in 1900, and increasing slightly to 2,100 in 1930. It's highest population was 2,151 in 1940, and the current population is estimated at 1,410 (2016).
